We all love a good movie night, right? It is the perfect at home activity to wind down after a crazy day, or gather with the kiddos on the couch with some pizza on a weekend. Movies are a fun, relaxing and great way to get some family time in, or some much needed “you” time. So to help you pick the right movie for your next night on the couch, here are some great choices.
These films all feature some angle of single parenting and the curveballs life throws at us sometimes. The movies on this list are perfect to watch on your own, or with friends and family. I will let you know which may or may not be suitable for kids. Ready? Let’s get into this.
Look Who’s Talking
We’re starting with one of my all-time favorite films. The 1989 classic starring Kirstie Alley and a still young John Travolta is a great romantic comedy about baby Mikey who always says exactly what he’s thinking! If you’ve never seen this treasure then what are you waiting for? It’s a personal favorite of mine and one of the best films about motherhood, relationships and being a woman. Also be sure to check out the sequels for more of the hilarious thoughts of little ones! Though, you may want to watch this one without yours!
Erin Brockovich
This award winning performance from Julia Roberts is a must see for any frustrated woman. Based on the real life of this no nonsense environmental activist and single mom, Erin Brockovich is a captivating and inspiring film about speaking up, speaking out, and standing up.
Where The Heart Is
A breakout performance from Natalie Portman, Where The Heart Is is truly a heartfelt film about 17 year old mom to be Novalee (Portman) who finds strength and guidance through an unexpected experience of giving birth in a Walmart! With new friends and a new outlook on life, Novalee finds her way through motherhood and womanhood. Might want to have some tissues handy for this one!
Home Again
This was probably my favorite new film from last year, it’s charming, funny, and all too real. Newly divorced Alice, wonderfully played by the fabulous Reese Witherspoon, moves back to L.A to raise her daughters and give herself a fresh start. After meeting three young guys who end up living with her and her daughters, all sorts of chaos and emotional confusion occurs. This is more of a film to watch without the kiddos, but it’s still a fantastic movie night pick!
My Girl
Another life-long favorite of mine is the touching story of a young girl facing the challenges of puberty. Growing up without a mom and a shy boy as her best friend, 11 year old Vada faces the realities of growing up. This movie will make you laugh and will definitely make you cry. Like ugly cry. Watch this with your older kids, a girlfriend or by yourself! This classic will stay with you for years and become a new favorite if it isn’t one already!
Big Little Lies
I’m throwing this groundbreaking tv series in the mix because it’s a must watch! It may not be a film, but it deserves to be on the list! With season 2 coming soon, the buzz surrounding this HBO series is never ending. The series stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and more, and is a dark drama about a group of moms in Monterey, California. If you haven’t already binged this insane show, then it’s time to catch up!
And that’s the list! What will you be watching tonight? Share this post and leave us a comment!
